URGENT ACTION! FREEDOM FOR SEVAN NISANYAN!

The plot set against Sevan Nisanyan should be abandoned.

In Turkey, a heaven for illegal construction projects, while no one gets punished, Sevan Nisanyan has been sent to jail as of January 2 for constructing supposedly illegal buildings on his own property. Furthermore someone that should be honored by a Nobel Prize for Architecture for what he has done in Sirince Village is facing another 50 years of imprisonment on trumped up charges.

As everyone already knows the reason for these charges have got nothing with illegal construction. He is being punished because of his work on history and language that clashes with the official historiography. Accrodingly a 13.5 month sentence threat given for not interpreting Islamic mythology to the approval of the Islamists is waiting in the appellate court. Because sending Sevan Nisanyan to jail because of his thoughts would create major international reaction, these illegal construction accusation has been created and to send him in jail. The problem is not an illegal construction issue. These trumped up charges should be dropped and he should be set free!

Sevan Nişanyan is not alone!

We protest the thirteen and a half months of sentencing of Sevan Nişanyan charged with the pretext that he does not interpret Islamic mythology like the Islamists. After Fazil Say, who has been also punished because of Omar Khayyam's poetry, the punishment of the writer, linguist and researcher Nişanyan is not only a strong indication that Sunni Islam's intolerance in Turkey is not only widespread at state level but has become clearly the official opinion.

It is also necessary to interpret Egemen Bagiş's, the Turkish Europe minister's, obscene comparision of the Swedish parliament's resolution of Seyfo (Assyrian Genocide)  as being "masturbation" in the same context - a statement he made during a meeting with the Assyrian/Syriac representatives in Sweden. In addition, the recent prison sentences of Necati Abay, the representative of the Solidarity Platform with Imprisoned Journalists for 11 years and three months, the sentencing of the former editor of the newspaper Azadiya Welat, Ibrahim Güvenç, for more than 10 years (10 years and 3 months and 22 days) can be seen as another evidence that freedom of expression faces new restrictions in Turkey.

We learn from an article of Mehmet Y. Yilmaz, who writes about an anecdote attributed to the Minister of Culture and appearing in the Hurriyet newspaper dated from 13 May 2013 under the title 'anecdote' the following: The Prime Minister Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a meeting of the so-called 'wise men' is cited saying, that Ömer Celik, the Minister of Culture, meant God when saying that even he cannot do anything against defamation, while Erdogan said of himself that they call him the father of Jesus - as told in the anecdote, which only trigged smiles.

INVITATION TO MEETING

January 20th 2007… The morrow of the ignoble killing of Hrant Dink. Temel Demirer is talking during a demonstration organized in Ankara in protest of the murder: “Hrant was not slain for being an Armenian. He was murdered because he had the courage to talk openly about the Armenian genocide. This state is guilty of genocide. This state is a criminal. It killed Hrant. To be silent is to take part in this crime. I am calling all of you to commit the crime of violating the 301th article of the Turkish penal code…”
What followed is not unexpected. A suit was brought against Demirer with the charge of having violated the articles  301/2 and 216 of the Turkish Penal Code. The charge is well-known: “Insulting Turkishness” and “stating opinion against the official Turkish version of history” …
As is known, the case which lasted six years, and which has become all the more complicated with the palliative rectifications of the party in power, ended in a “conditional postponement of penalty” as was anticipated in the “third package of amendment of the judicial regime”, against all the objections of Demirer and his defenders who were claiming “either condemnation or acquittal”.  The case was suspended with the condition that the culprit refrain from committing the same “crime” for three years!

HANDS OFF MY LAWYER!... FREEDOM TO DEFENCE!...

Once again we are faced with a new battue.
Those in power are once again attacking our right to defence.
Their target, once again, is the Associaton of Progressist Lawyers (CHD), and its daredevil members.
We must solemnly declare, in face of this attack, that they are our comrades.
For all those revolutionary lawyers who were arrested, from Selçuk Kozağaçlı to Taylan Tanay, are struggling fort he sake of equality and justice of the “Days of Bread and Rose”…
We are witnesses to the corageous struggles they have been leading in defence of Festus Okey and Engin Ceber, both killed by brutal police violence… We are witnesses to their struggle to reveal the police-military hoods; to their persistent pursuit of the cases of revolutionaries fallen under torture; their unearthing of the bodies killed by the military secret police, JITEM; their unflagging efforts to defend the cases of endless femicides, of peasants fighting for their land rights against the hydroelectric dams, of urban poor whose neighborhoods are threatened by gentrification projects, of striking workers, of boycotting students, of Kurds arrested massively along with their lawyers… We are witnesses to their preventive educational program “Usual Suspects” which aims to inform and warn ordinary citizens as well as civil rights activists; their demonstration of how judges and prosecutors have become useless in a penal system in which every case is instigated and disposed of by the security forces.
They are our defenders, our lawyers…
Selçuk Kozağaçlı, the president of CHD, who was in Beirut when the raid on his association was realized and eight of his colleagues were arrested, has made this statement:
“Are we to learn from you, who cannot even go to the toilet without the permission of US, who cannot fly a plane unless the US provides the code, who cannot enter the NATO bases operating within the country, who are indebted to imperialism their rank, education, reason, wealth and badge… are we to learn from you who the agents are? Is the police of those who educate their children abroad on the pretext that there is no freedom in this country, to teach us what it means to work for another country? Do you think that we will be tamed by a baseball bat just like you were? Behave yourselves!
We are heirs to a judicial tradition which has been fighting against your courts, your prosecutors, your police, your investigations since forty years. We have long seen, solved and exposed every trick of yours which seem to you dexterous.
We have no illusion as to thinking we are living in a state governed by law…
Do whatever you can, and we’ll see who will be ashamed in the end.
Once again we are right, and we shall win!”

Yes, they are the lawyers to people’s just cause!
They have been defending us selflessly until today.
Now it is our turn to defend them.
And we solemnly declare that we’ll do it by all our means!

INVITATION TO THE COMMEMORATION OF OUR ASSASINATED ARMENIAN BROTHER HRANT DINK

Özdemir Asaf says, in his wonderful verses “Do not talk with lies in your mouth!”; and he seems like addressing to those who are foaming lies when talking about the Armenian genocide!
The lies of the liers are self-evident; but what of those who consociate with those lies, as if attesting the saying, “When ignorance is innocence!”
So numbered are those who are described by Gilles Deleuze in the terms: “The power invests in the oppressed; traverse them with their help, is supported by them.”
Whatever people say; the negation of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 is an oppression which holds the society to ransom within the clutches of the official ideology; true this is. But it is more than this: It is the banalization of fascism within a anomie which encourages impunity.
The condemnation of a brother nation to an unexampled catastroph in the name of Tukefication of capital is not a tale to be related in the past perfect tense.
Because genocide is our today, as is attested by the reality “One and a half million + Hrant” (or Sevag); it is as actual as the chauvinistic cries during the national football games: “Those who do not stand u pare Armenians!”
